There are 5 Vowels in English language and these are given below:-

E
I
O
U

These alphabets are called vowels because when we speak these alphabets the air coming from the lungs is not blocked by our mouth.

Please Note- We put "an" before a vowel.

Examples

An inkpot
An umbrella
An Elephant
An Owl
An Ass
An Octopus

Notice these words..All these are starting with a vowel and therefore we add "an" in front of them.
